Carolanne’s Kitchen at Fourways Farmer’s Market

Fourways FMarket

There was sheer excitement in the house last week as I received an email from Jean of Fourways Farmer’s Market. She was delivering some great news to me; that I had been offered a stall at the market. I was thrilled, over the moon and scrambling to find my phone so I could scream down the phone to Tomás.

There are many markets in Johannesburg, and I mean many! There’s at least one in every suburb, if not on every corner to cater for the weekend crowds and fill you up on all manor of scrumptious goodies. But, Fourways Farmer’s Market for me, is one of the nicest I have ever been to, as a customer. As you park up and walk through the entrance to the market, you instantly get a a feel for that homely, chilled out vibe. Hay bales dot the chill out areas and picnic blankets with families sprawled out on with their market goodies cover the grass. Children run around checking out the market garden or playing with Sand-Art and the adults tuck into a taco, curries, boerie rolls or a sumptuous beer from the bar. From cheeses, cold cuts, beers and fresh coconuts to hot foods both sweet and savoury. Fourways Farmer’s Market has all of them. Traders strive to produce the highest standard of ethically produced goods and I am so delighted that I am going to be part of this community.

As an Irish Chef, I am so hugely excited to be starting at the market as this means I can now showcase even more of my Irish cuisine to the masses of Johannesburg. My Sourdough Starter from Ballymaloe will be producing loaf after loaf of bread to encase Gourmet Sandwiches, Scones with homemade jam and cream for the sweet tooth and so much more. I do love to communicate with food, it is my language and I have become so much more comfortable working with it. The produce we have here in South Africa is truly spoiling me, Avocado flesh bursting through their skins, Zucchini’s bright and full of summer flavours, organic and graass fed/pastured meats of the highest quality…..I could go on!

You’ll have to come and visit me at the market to sample my goodies and check out the rest of the amazing stallholders.
